VAMAN JAYANTI

  • Vrat Name : Vaman Dvadashi
  • Vrat Tithi : Bhadrapad Shu. Dvadashi
    According to Bhagavatpuran, the eighth chapter, on Bhadrapad Shu. Dwadashi at noon , Shravan Nakshatra ‘Vaman Avatar’ incarnated on the earth, so they observe fast on this day.

इयमेव श्रवण द्वादशी तत्रेकादश्यां श्रवण योगे सैवो पोष्या |
एकादशी द्वादशी च वैष्णव्यमपि तत्रचेत् |

तद्विष्णुशृंखलंनाम विष्णुसायुज्यकृद्भवेत ||

Following ancient texts describes this fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and shows various  stories related with it as,

  • Taittiriya Samhita (2.4.12.2)
  • Shatapatha Brahman (1.2.2.1-5)
  • Shreemad Bhagavat (8.18.5-6)

Procedure to perform the Vrata

  • Take oil massage and clean bath early in the morning.
  • Take sacred water in the Kalash (urn) and put it on the table for Puja.
  • Then cover the Kalash with golden, silver or wooden Purnapatra (plate).
  • Fill the covering with the wheat grains so as to establish the idol of Lord Vaman on it.
  • Then place materials like दंड, कमंडलू, छत्र, पादुका, अक्षमाला etc. above the Kalash for Lord Vaman (as per the description of Lord Vaman in puranas) and perform the “shodashopachar pujan” (worship of God).

Arghya-pradanam

Now its time to offer Arghya (Taking गंध, अक्षत, पुष्प, सुपारी, नाणे in hand and releasing water on it .) Chat following Mantra.

नमस्ते पद्मनाभाय नमस्ते जलशायिने | तुभ्यमर्घ्यं प्रयच्छामि बालवामन रूपिणे ||

Prayer of Lord Vaman

अजिनदण्डकमण्डलुमेखला रुचिरपावनवामन मूर्तये |
मितजगत् त्रितयाय जितारये निगमवाक्पटवे बटवे नमः ||

  • On the next day again the Pujan Vidhi (worship of God) is performed and the Kalash with the idol of Lord Vaman is donated to the Purohit (priest).

Mantra to donate the Kalash

नमो नमस्ते गोविन्द बुधश्रवण संज्ञकः |अद्यौघसंक्षयं कृत्वा सर्व सौख्यप्रदोभव || प्रीयताम् देवदेशोमम संशय नाशनः ||

  • In this Pujan Vidhi (worship) the Naivedyam of ‘Curd-Rice’ is offered to the God. It is said that this Puja / Vrat provides wealth, prosperity and long life to the devotees of Lord Vaman.
  • Generally this Vrat is performed for Twelve years and on the last year the Idol of Lord Vaman is donated to the Purohit (priest) by uttering this mantra.

वामनः प्रतिगृह्णाति वामनोऽहं ददामि ते |वामनं सर्वतो भद्रं द्विजाय प्रतिपादये ||

Importance

  • This Tithi (day) with ‘Shravan Nakshatra’ is called as ‘Vishnu-Shrunkhal Yog’ and is considered very important for the worship of Lord Vishnu and His Incarnations.
  • It is said that Lord Vishnu takes rest for four months starting from Ashadhi Ekadashi (Devashayani Ekadashi) and the day before Vaman Dvadashi is the mid-day of this four months rest (Chaturmas) and hence His devotees celebrate this day as “Shree Vishnu Parivartan Utsav” by  uttering this Mantra, “ॐ वासुदेव जगन्नाथप्राप्तेयं द्वादशी तव | पार्श्वेन परिवर्तस्व सुखंस्वपिहि माधव ||
  • Also it is said that it keep us away from bad and evil happenings in future and protect us.
  • Today two main idols  of Lord Vaman are recorded (as per historical research), one is “Vaman” at “Ashutosh Museum (Calcutta)” and “Virat Trivikram” at “Dhaka Museum”.
